The Jacksonville Jaguars are ushering in a new era under head coach Liam Coen, and second-year wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is primed to be the cornerstone of a revamped offense. Following a historic rookie season in which he shattered franchise records with 1,282 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, Thomas has already cemented his status as Trevor Lawrence's primary target.
Lawrence gushed about his star receiver at the NFL Combine, stating, "He's SO fast but it doesn't look like he's running hard. He's one of the SMOOTHEST guys I've ever seen." Thomas' elite speed was showcased in Week 5 when he clocked 22.15 mph on an 85-yard touchdown, the fastest time recorded by a Jaguar since Next Gen Stats began tracking in 2018.
His standout performances included a Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts, where he recorded five receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown in a 37–34 victory. In Week 15 against the New York Jets, he had ten receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns, despite a 32–25 loss. The following week, against the Las Vegas Raiders, he notched nine receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown in a 19–14 defeat. These achievements led to his selection as a Pro Bowl alternate, replacing Zay Flowers.
With Coen at the helm, installing his signature high-tempo, high-motion attack, the LSU product is expected to be deployed in even more dynamic ways to maximize his game-breaking ability. Coen has made it clear that the passing game will revolve around Thomas, with plans to move the versatile playmaker across the formation to create mismatches.
Despite his record-setting production, Thomas was overlooked for Offensive Rookie of the Year in favor of Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. While the snub may serve as extra motivation, Thomas remains focused on elevating his game to superstar status in 2025.
The Jaguars have reaffirmed their commitment to Lawrence amid Steelers trade rumors, and he has been actively involved in the team's GM search. Jacksonville ultimately hired James Gladstone from the Rams' front office, potentially opening up a familiarity pipeline that could facilitate a Matthew Stafford trade. Coen served as the Rams OC in 2022 during Stafford's lone season working with him.
Coen has assembled an experienced staff to spearhead the franchise turnaround, retaining well-regarded special teams coordinator Heath Farwell while adding long-time NFL coaches Edgar Bennett (WRs), Ron Milus (DBs), and Shaun Sarrett (OL). Jaguars legend Tony Boselli is also taking on an expanded role as EVP to work in lockstep with Coen and ownership.
With Thomas as the offensive focal point, Lawrence poised to make a leap in an optimized system, an infusion of talent on the roster and coaching staff, and a new regime fully empowered to execute a fresh vision, the Jaguars have the potential to field a top-flight offense in 2025. If everything falls into place, Jacksonville will be must-watch football with Brian Thomas Jr. leading the charge as the NFL's next great receiver.
