Cushions disappear, safeties crowd the goal line, and touchdowns increasingly come from anticipation throws into a shrinking window rather than plays that need room to develop. A quarterback's total here reflects command of that tighter geometry, not the arm strength that defines his numbers out in open space.
Volume shapes this number as much as touch does. An offense that reaches the scoring area on nearly every drive will out-produce a more explosive offense that finishes from distance and rarely needs a short throw at all. A quarterback can rank near the top mostly because his team gets there often, while a sharper passer on a lower-volume offense sits well behind him.
Read this as a finishing measure rather than a full account of passing skill. It shows which quarterback his coaches trust once the margin for error narrows to a few yards, but says little about who moves the offense into scoring position to begin with, and pairing this view with overall passing numbers tells a fuller story than either does alone.
